„Living in a gallery“. The brief was clearly defined: living in a gallery. In this penthouse in Mannheim, artworks and objects were meant to take centre stage. The lighting was to create atmosphere while remaining visually restrained. The apartment already had a solid foundation. Light surfaces, reduced materials, high-quality furnishings. The task was to refine this quality through a precise lighting concept.

Filigree at 2.40 m. The ceiling height is 2.40 m. A dominant track system was therefore not an option. The client wanted a high-quality solution with the most delicate appearance possible. The choice fell on the Sense System Ceiling48 with Fifty XS spots – entirely in white. The track sits quietly within the ceiling. The spots are compact and can be directed precisely onto artworks and objects. Dimming plays a key role in daily use. The lighting mood changes depending on time of day and situation. The direction of the spots can be adjusted whenever artworks are repositioned.

Planning behind the scenes. The concrete ceiling posed technical challenges. Transformers could only be partially concealed. Adjustments were made on site. Close coordination between im:raum, Buschfeld and Thomas Meschert, Meschert Elektro – Technik GbR was essential to the result. “Behind a project that looks this effortless lies an enormous amount of detailed planning and passion,” says Eva-Maria Fabian of im:raum. Today, she describes the outcome as “more than successful”. Visitors are often surprised by how strongly a well-conceived lighting concept changes the perception of the space. And that was precisely the intention.
