Sanspareil in Bayreuth
For the new permanent exhibition in the Morgenländischer Bau in Sanspareil, a museum lighting concept was developed for historic rooms, sensitive exhibits and very different forms of interpretation.
“What can only be found here?”
This simple question marked the starting point for Dr Cordula Mauß, curator of the new permanent exhibition. Many thanks for the conversation and for the insights into a place whose history reaches surprisingly far back.
Anyone who thinks of Sanspareil simply as a Baroque palace and garden complex is actually starting a few million years too late. The story of the site reaches back to the Jurassic sea. Its reef formed the rocky landscape that later reminded Margrave Friedrich of Chinese rock gardens and became the starting point for an extraordinary garden. Natural history, garden design and courtly life are closely intertwined here.
The new exhibition takes up precisely these connections. A diorama leads visitors into the Jurassic sea, Bayreuth marbles tell the story of the region’s geology and its economic significance, while historic furniture offers a glimpse into courtly life. In the natural history cabinet, rocks are displayed alongside animal and plant specimens and an ivory bowl from the historic collection. Listening stations, tactile elements, microscopes and a graphic novel complement the traditional exhibits. Here, history is also something to explore, try out and experience with several senses.
For the lighting, this variety created an unusual challenge. Or, as Cordula Mauß puts it: “In a historic building, electricity is in short supply.” Cables could not simply be routed wherever needed, and the valuable floors could not be used for installations. At the same time, specified lux levels and UV protection had to be observed, texts had to remain legible, display cases required precise lighting, and the character of the historic rooms had to be preserved.
Freestanding Tri48 Floor luminaires therefore provide light in many areas without interfering with the historic fabric. In other rooms, Pend48 is used as a suspended solution. For the collection display cases, Buschfeld developed a bespoke, exceptionally slender Micro LED solution in natural brass. Different tools for different rooms, with one shared aim: the light should help tell the story without becoming part of the exhibition itself.
