St. Johannis, Hitzacker

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Johannis in Hitzacker was rethought in lighting terms as part of an extensive refurbishment. The existing chandelier no longer met functional requirements or contemporary expectations of light quality. The aim was a restrained lighting solution that provides sufficient light for services and events while integrating sensitively into the listed historic space. With a custom Rondo48 luminaire by Buschfeld, a solution was realised that preserves clear sightlines and supports different uses of the church interior.

Lighting design was carried out by lucente from Sittensen. The intention was a lighting concept that remains visually understated yet precise in its effect. The view towards the altar was to remain unobstructed, while the seating area needed to be evenly lit to allow comfortable reading. The chandelier was meant to be perceived again as an object in the space, without dominating it.

A Rondo48 luminaire by Buschfeld was selected. The system has already been used by lucente in several church projects and has proven to be a reliable and discreet solution. In Hitzacker, the luminaire forms a calm circular presence beneath the historic ceiling rosette. It is clearly visible, yet light in appearance, almost floating within the space.

A particular feature of the project is the suspension. Power is supplied via the steel cables, making any visible wiring unnecessary. The suspension was designed to prevent the luminaire from rotating. Fixing is located in the attic, using an existing opening in the ceiling rosette. This solution was developed specifically for the building and realised as a custom construction.

The luminaire is fitted with Ninety Five S spotlights with Tube 95 in white. Control is handled via Casambi and integrated into the existing lighting control system. This allows different lighting scenes to be called up for services, concerts or events. The position of the spotlights remains constant, while the system can be extended if required.

Today, the chandelier once again plays a clear role within the space. It illuminates the seating area without competing with the altar. From the gallery in particular, it becomes evident how naturally the luminaire integrates into the existing architecture. The historic ceiling remains legible and the room feels open and calm.

For many involved, the chandelier has become the defining element of the new lighting. Not because of its size, but because of its restraint. It brings together function and form and delivers light precisely where it is needed.
